The 79th Annual Convention will be held in Eastbourne
24th to 27th September 2015 register here
The 78th convention of the IBM British Ring No. 25 took place from the 24th to 28th September 2014 in the Jurasic coast delightful resort of Bournemouth in Dorset. Hundreds of delegates descended on the Pavilion to enjoy the diversity of magic all arranged by Ringers Brian Miller and Keith Cooper. As well as British delegates they came from the USA, Canada, Ireland, Belgium and Germany. The International President Shawn Farquhar and International Secretary Don Wiberg were made very welcome by the British Ringers.
In the stage competition Edward Hilsum took first place and won the British Ring Shield. Second was Dave Andrews who also received the Dittia Shield for Manipulation. Third being Matthew Blackwell who also took the Tom Harris Cup for comedy. The Craig Trophy for best dealer display was presented to Prop Dog (Dave Bonsall) and the Ali Bongo Micro Marathon award went to Bernard Jones.
A fine selection of lectures covered many subjects including comedy, mentalism, close up magic and children’s entertainment. Amongst the lecturers from this side of the pond we had Wayne Dobson, Terry Herbert, Chris Hare, Wayne Fox, Michael Carr and Ian Barradell. From the other side came Shawn Farquhar and Fielding West. From Europe Axel Hecklau and Jeton demonstrated their expertise. Added to all this, workshops on face painting and balloon modelling were presented by Pam Cooper and Snaggers respectively.
There was what I call the people talks where Eddie Dawes introduced speakers in the History of Mystery event featuring talks by Anne Goulden, Trevor Dawson and Peter Lane. An afternoon remembering Pat Page was introduced by Max Blake and presented by his family and Paul Stone gave the Jeffrey Atkins Memorial Lecture entitled “It Started with a Dream”.
There were performances named: The Opening Show, Gala of Youth, Late Gala, and Stars of the Future.
The International President visited each of the special venue shows and this was coordinated by Peter Greenwood.
There was a Gala Dinner at The Royal Bath Hotel and a trip to Beaulieu. Reports on all the events are scheduled to appear in the Budget during November and December.
The new look Sooty and Friends Magic Show attracted a good sized audience and the outside entertainers looked really smart in their matching waistcoats and accessories.
The International Stars of Magic and Variety Show was one of the best I have ever seen not only in the selection of acts but in production too. The lighting, sound, stage dressing and technical production were second to none. I do not make comments like this lightly and believe me I have seen a lot of gala shows (both ours and others) over the past 50 years or so.
Next year we go back to Eastbourne from 24th to 27th September 2015. Alan Astra has now been installed as the president for 2014 -2015 and looks forward to meeting many of you during his term of office. His dinner is on the 25th April 2015 in Stevenage. More details on this soon.
